Hi There! Way to go on your running adventures and workouts!
It would be a good idea to start practicing this eating-running routine so you can perfect it before your 5K. I completely relate with working out on an empty stomach first thing in the morning, however since I got pg, I've had to change up my routine and it wasn't easy.
Figure out what is good with your stomach and then figure out how far in advance you have to wait between eating and running. Some foods are much better digested right before a run, and so it depends what you eat. I can usually eat a piece of toast or a half bagel (whole grain) with peanut butter within the hour of a run and feel good. Grapes, banana, and Odwalla bars (superfood flavor) also work for me. If it were to be a full meal, I would probably have to wait 3-4 hours.
I would just eat lightly but healthy throughout the day, and figure out through experimentation what works best before your run that won't give you that sloshy feeling or cramps. Have you ever tried energy gels? It might help you (100-110 calories) prior to your run, but I would suggest trying them before the race b/c they don't sit well with everyone.
Let me know if you have more questions. I'd love to help out.
