I breastfed all 3 of my boys. My first for 4 1/2 months, my second for 8 months, my 3rd for 11 months. The more you tell yourself that you can do it, the better exerience you will have.
The BEST advice I got was from my MIL...As akward as it was, she told me to make sure to condition my nipples BEFORE the baby is born. When you are in the shower, twist and rub them with a wash cloth. it will hurt at first, but then you get used to it, and come time to breast feed, it wont hurt. In my 2 years of breast feeding, I never once had a cracked nipple, soreness or pain of any kind. Education is the best option for you. If it hurts, or something isn't working, there is usually a reason for it. Inverted nipples, or maybe your baby has tough tie.
