I confess when I was dating this was a dealbreaker for me.  If I guy I was on a date with didn't use his please and thank yous with the waitress/waiter there was very likely not going to be a second date.  It bothers me to no end when people are disrespectful to people in the service industry.

Do you say thank you to your waiter?
Does it bother you when people you're with do not?
Do you teach your kids to say thank you to your servers?

I say please and thank you, of course.

I think you can tell a lot by a person by how they treat "the help".  Especially on a date, of course they are trying to woo you and be charming.   It bothers me when people are rude or bossy, but not necessarily when they don't use the words please and thank you.  Some people don't have nice manners, but they are still nice.  I definitely appreciate it when people say please and thank you though.

My 2yo is nervous/shy with the waitstaff, I think they are too near to him.  Plus, they are usually rushing off, and don't seem to ave the time to wait for him to say anything, so I haven't taught him to talk to them yet.  He does thank nurses/doctors, cashiers, people who hold the door for us, etc.  It was very cute to me, when after his stitches, while still crying, he thanked the doctor as she left.

I always thank the wait staff...usually each time they bring anything to our table, or take an order and also when leaving. The weird thing I have noticed though is that for some reason waiters and waitresses make me uncomfortable. I think I am uncomfortable with the idea of someone waiting on me. I'm just not that kind of person. It always feels rude to ask people to get things for me or refill my coffee cup...KWIM?

Yes, although, James and Kitana are kind of shy, and I think sometimes they don't hear them.  Jade is still a work in progress...

I always say thank you.  I honestly don't think I've ever noticed whether other people do it or not.  I'm pretty sure DF does it, but I don't usually pay attention.  Rudeness I have issues with, but please and thank you I don't notice either way.

Ninety percent of the time I thank my waitstaff.  The only time I might not is if I'm in some serious, deep conversation with someone and my server comes to, like, drop off a side of mayo.  Other than that, of course I use manners.  It's habit.  I wouldn't really notice anyone I was with *not* using manners unless it was really egregious though.

Just because they are waiting on you doesn't mean they don't deserve common courtesy.  I worked in retail for 15 years and I always found it rude when people couldn't say please or thank you.

I thank everyone. I thank the people at the bank, the people who hold the door open, or let me pull into the garage before they pull out, I thank my waitstaff (even if it's just filling up my water or taking my menu). I literally thank EVERYone. Anyone that comes in contact gets a thank you for some reason or another now that I think about it. Maybe I'm Too polite, HAH. I'm just very gracious I guess.

DS already says 'thank you' every time a server brings something to our table. He's very good about it and doesn't even require prompting anymore.

I am very big on pleases and thank yous, and so I utilize them regularly. I will ask for a manager if I get stellar service, just to let them know they have a good server. I worked in a restaurant, and it is tiring work and generally thankless, so those few polite, nice customers make your day. :)

We have dined together Julie...would I have been accepted for a 2nd date?

I think its important to thank your server especially if they did a great job..I have had incidents where I don't think my table was priority and the issue was resolved with a chat with the boss but, I still thanked anyone else that used their ability to be polite. like the hostess/host and what not. My service and my satisfaction with it is usually taken care of in the tip...we are very good tippers if the service is up to par.

You sound like me.

Out of curiosity....(I have actually been wondering this for days, and this is a good time to bring it up)

If traffic is bad and someone lets you in...do you wave?  ( I think I am the only person in Baton Rouge that does this....it kind of ticks me off that no one waves thanks to me :P )

I wave : ) I came from the country where everyone knew everyone so it was just something we did. We also said hi to people we made eye contact with while walking down the street and *gasp* offered a smile! When I do that where I live now, people look at me like I just escaped from the looney bin!

I think pleases and thank yous are required everywhere (even the DMV, LOL!!). It is really easy for me to tell with my students who was raised to say P and TY and who wasn't. I try to enforce it in a positive way with my 6th graders.

ITA. Always thank the help and treat them with the same consideration you would hope to receive in that position.

I do.

We were out at a restaurant once and Addison asked the waitress for milk.  I wouldn't let the waitress get it for her until she said please.  I'm a mean momma.

I feel that we set examples to our children by the way we act.  I always try to say please and thank you to whoever serves me.  I know that I sometimes either forget or just don't do it but that is rare.

I thank my wait staff constantly. lol  When they seat us at a table, after taking drink orders, after dropping off drinks, after food orders, after dropping off food, if they ask how we're doing, or if I ask for something special.  If they pick up empty plates from our table, when they drop off the bill, after I pay the bill.

I teach Nadia the same.  She orders her own meal when we're out.  She says "I'll have X please" and then thank you when it's delivered. If she forgets, I remind her.

It does bother me when people are not polite to wait staff, or anyone, really.

I really thank everyone, all the time.  If someone holds the door for me, or when I'm ordering coffee through drive thru.  If someone wishes me a good day, I thank them.  I thank my daughter for a job well done, or hugs and kisses, or I love yous.

Yes, I wave. I do it as a thanks and also to acknowledge that I see they are letting me in.  It bothers me when others don't, but really, most people around here do wave.  If I am walking and someone stops at a cross walk to let me cross, I wave and smile as well.  Again, most people do this around here.  But I've been told the people in my city are very polite (a new girl at work had just moved here and couldn't get over how nice and polite every single person was! lol)
