We have debated what food stamps should and should not cover in the past and I am curious as to what others would think about this.

I was looking on the internet for local things to do with our kids this summer and came across the website for a you catch trout farm. Basically, you can go to a trout farm and they will provide the bait and equipment to fish in their ponds. They do not assist with the fishing process, but do clean any fish you catch. There is not cost for admission, but they charge for the fish you catch based on their size. There are also fees for reserving picnic space or taking a tour of the farm.

The website annouced in big letters that they now accept stamps for their fish.

WDYT?

Personally, I don't find catfish edible. But hey, many people do & love it! Fresh caught catfish? I would assume that this would be a healthy thing for people, depending on how it's prepared (I mean, I can make a pretty unhealthy zucchini!).

As long as it isn't going to pay for renting the equipment, which you said is free, I say GREAT! Fresh food!!!!!!

I would also encourage farmers market vendors to take them as well.

I think these kind of things are fantastic. Fresh caught fish is healthy, and I am glad to see that they are offering a way to make these types of opportunities available.

My town has a farmers market and they started accepting food stamps. At first there was a huge uproar about it from a certain segment of our local population.

Again, kudos to the owners of the trout farm.

I think the edibility of catfish is a cultural thing. Where I'm from, catfish is a delicacy lol. But while I haven't really found a way other than fried that it's palatable, fresh caught and fried at home is still going to be a better alternative than processed, frozen fishsticks.

As for the use of food stamps: I love the idea and can't understand why anyone would be opposed to being able to use food stamps to buy food. Even though it's largely about the experience, the end goal is to go home with a bag of fresh fish. And an uproar over using food stamps at a farmer's market? WTF, man?

I agree about it being a cultural thing. I will admit to never having been a fan of fish or seafood.

It is a great thing to do. They can eat healthier. If more farmers markets/whole food things took it people on food stamps would be able to get off pre-packed stuff.

Not a problem. There is a farm near where I live that takes food stamps for the upick strawerries, tomatoes, etc. Seems like the same thing to me.

Using stamps to pay for fresh fish is better than using it for little debbies and soda! I say its a great idea!

not only would it provide people the food the stamps are intended to buy but also does so in a way that improves mental health, increases family bonding, supports developing skills, etc. it's fantastic.

i hate fish, so I would never use them for it, but it's great for everyone else

I am not a fan of fish either. But my kids and DH are. If healthy food was cheaper then junk it would go a long way in helping those on goverment help eat better.
