That's great! I hope that catches on in other places as well. I imagine what it will take is lots of hard data showing $ saved by avoiding premature births. Thanks for posting this!

Interestingly it didn't even address the issue that a due date can me miscalculated by a couple of weeks pretty easily. I'm sure many babies that are induced at what is presumed to be 38 weeks is actually 36... BIG difference.
In fact... I think that may have been what happened with my friends son. They induced at around 38 weeks and he has respiratory distress and was in the NICU for a full week. I think he may have been younger than they thought.

This is an awesome step - I hope it sweeps the nation.  The fact that JAHCO (joint commission) is getting involved is great because hospitals have to pass that in order to keep and get accreditation.

I have seen first hand when I was in nursing school what happens when desperate moms and weak doctors induce too early.  The mom was so desperate to have the baby at 36+5(or so) and had been begging the doctor for the past month or so about setting an induction date that he finally gave in and induced her just before 37 weeks.  The baby came out blue - ran to the NICU and stayed there for 3 days.  The neonatologist was really angry and came in and gave the OB the riot act and went in and talked the mom about why her decision put her baby in harms way.

I agree with PP as well that the idea of using Naegele's rule for due date calculation is outdated and actually wrong because Naegele based it on lunar months and he used the old 1800s calculation of lunar when now we know that 10 lunar months is no 280 days but 295 days which brings due dates closer to what we consider 42 weeks.  Also, it is based on the idea that every women's menstural cycle is 28 days which we know is not true for everyone.  There is a new way to calculate due date created by Nichols that takes menstrual cycles into account.  For me using Naegele's had me due last Friday, but using Nichols rule makes me due this Friday.

Thank you for sharing, it was a very interesting article.  It's nice to see some doctors are truly out there and they are trying to connect the dots...

I forwarded the article on to some of the doula groups I'm a part of.
