Oliver will be four this summer and I think is too old for the jon-jon type portrait outfits that I have dressed him in for semiformal/formal events so far.

We have a summer family wedding to which the kids are invited.  If I can go off of the weddings of the other two sisters in the family as well as how this wedding has been described, it will be an outdoor wedding (August in northern Vermont, so hot but probably not scorching), and moderately dressy (women in cocktail dresses, men in suits or slacks and jackets, but no tuxes/evening dresses).

What do you dress a four-year-old boy in for such a thing?  I think he still looks way too babyish for a jacket and slacks, plus it's probably going to be a bit warm to expect a four-year-old to put up with that.  Linen shirt and shorts?  Any other suggestions?

my guess would be linen shorts and shirts...

but I'm not one to ask for advice...here, in Big Sky Country, people wear jeans to weddings...and funerals..and christenings..and church...LOL

Nice Khaki shorts, a short sleeve button down and light weight sweater vest.  Or light weigh khaki pants.....

Jackson is 4.  I would put him in some light-weight khaki slacks and a nice (also light-weight) button up shirt.

Frank and my nephew have gone to/been in 3 weddings this year. my nephew is almost 4.The first was a church wedding with the reception at an outdoor venue. Frank wore plaid overalls with a blue polo. Nephew wore seersucker slacks and a white polo with a blue vest.

At the second wedding it was a field/house wedding in the summer in Bolton Mass. Frank wore khaki shorts a white polo and a patchwork sportscoat. Nephew wore whole seersucker suit. Both ended up losing the coats b/c it was too hot. The young French boys IN the wedding wore chocolate brown linen shorts and white button ups.

At my brothers wedding in Jamaica in Nov the boys wore matching green khaki linen pants (that were like the drawstring pj style cut) and white linen button up shirts.

For a more casual wedding, especially an outdoor one I am a BIG fan of linen pants and a white button up for boys. Although my nephews seersucker suit was a big hit and VERY cute.

*Warning*  I'm no fashion expert.

I've seen cute, dressy shorts that might work.

I'd do dressy light weight pants, a shirt, and a tie.  Dress shirts are usually thin, and you could skip the undershirt if it's hot out.  Maybe a vest (button down, not sweater) if it's not too, too hot.  Vests are not as warm as jackets, and they are much cuter on a little guy.

They usually have nice outfits like that on sale relatively cheap for Easter.  I'd get it then and pray he doesn't grow out of it by summer.

Um, Steve Harvery (comedian) has a clothing line for little boys called Little Kings and they have like 2 piece, short sleeves dress outfits for boys. Linen like pants and shirts. Stores like Burlington Coat Factory carry the line around here. Even found a link

Hope that helps, here is a pic of what I'm talking about. It is kind of...urban?

Summer wedding, outdoors, 4 yr old...I'd say Khaki pants and a short sleeve dress shirt in a summery colour/style (pale blue, check print, yellow, etc), brown oxford style shoes.

I agree with most everyone else on a light weight khaki pants (not shorts) and then I'd probably go with a short sleeve button up shirt, maybe with a sweater vest or even a bow tie  (wink wink Teirza)   :)

DS had just turned 4 when he was in my sisters wedding this August in Philadelphia.  He wore black pants & a white button down shirt.  BUT he was a ring bearer.  Both items were linen.  His change of clothes were a pair of linen shorts & a polo.  (Which, btw, he never put on.  He didn't stop long enough to change his clothes!)   The shorts I bought at Old Navy.

If we were just guests at the wedding, I would have done the linen shorts & polo.  Maybe khaki pants.  BUT it was a very casual wedding.  But when it comes to kids I have the view that for things like this they need to be comfortable.

I'd do khaki type pants and a long or short sleeve, button down shirt.  I'd skip a jacket or vest.  I'd also stash a spare short leeve pants and shirt outfit in the car/diaper bag for in case he gets unbearably hot or if others dress down.

eta: oh, he could so rock a bow tie!  that would be adorable.

If they had this in a blue or silver/gray hue, I could totally see Oliver in it.

If you were going to be down near me, I would say shorts. If the weather is not too hot, pants would be more appropriate. :) I see some awesome family portraits at this event!!!!
