Hi ladies.  I'm currently 21 weeks 6 days pregnant with our 2nd son and I have my heart set on a vbac.  I had a c-section with my ds after being induced, 12 hours of labor, making it to 91/2 cm.  My doctor had me push twice and then told me that my son wasn't coming out that way, we needed to consider a c-section.  She said that she would do a vbac this time as long as I went into labor on my own.  I was very confused last time since they were acting like I was in labor.  I had back labor, but didn't know what it was and was very scared since my "contractions" weren't like the ones they described in my childbirth class.  She said she could induce me the following morning since she was going to be in the hospital that day anyway.  They started the pitocin at 7 the next morning and I asked for my epidural at 7:30 for fear that if the back labor started again I wouldn't be able to sit still for the epidrual.  So I stayed in bed occasionally switching sides as the nurses told me to.  The reason for my c-section was "failure to progress".  I like to think of it as "doctor was impatient and just wanted to get it over with."
I just recently had my last apt with that doctor and I'm going to interview with a different doctor closer to home on Tuesday.  I will also be delivering in a different hospital.  Even though my old doctor told me that she would do a vbac, I just don't have faith that she would do everything in her power to help me do that.  She never told me that being induced increased my chances of having a c-section.  I was never encouraged to get up and move around at all.  I was checked into the hospital at 7pm the night before I was induced in case I made any progress that night.  I was in bed for 24 hours bf my son was born.
This time around I'm educating myself as much as possible and my husband and I are going to take a Lamaze class.  I'd like to either do this totally natural or go as long as I can without pain meds.  At least if I have back labor this time, I'll know what it is and not freak out.  I don't wish to repeat any of what happened last time, with the exception of the birth of my son of course.  When I meet with this doctor on Tuesday I plan on letting him know exactly what I want and dont want and if he's not on board with it, I guess the search continues. I will of course be flexible with some things and if a c-section is needed due to emergency situations than it is what it is.
Sorry that this is such a long post.  I'm really not usually this long winded.  Thank you for reading the whole thing if you did.  I look forward to getting to know everyone and hearing everyone's successful vbac stories.  I'm picturing it happen everyday and can't wait for my chance to hold my baby on my chest instead of seeing him wheeled away as I'm sewn up.

Hello and welcome!  I'm also planning a vbac for my baby due in March!  Good luck with your appt, I hope this new Dr is very vbac supportive for you.  I would also check out your local ICAN group and see if they have a provider list.  I found a great midwife through my local group.

Welcome to the group!! Keep us posted on what you find with the doctors you interview... Love that you picture yours happening... I do to! :) I just have to get pregnant!

Ask away here... lots of ladies with lots of knowledge! Selena has an awesome idea, too - checking with a local ICAN group to see if they have a list of providers that are supportive - that would at least cut your interviewing down! I know our group has a list too! :)

Thank you both for the idea of the ICAN group.  I've never heard of it before but of course I'm new to all of this.  I will definitely check into that.  I'm hoping that all goes well with the doctor on Tuesday.  I'm a little nervous about switching drs half way through, but I've read about other women who have switched even closer to their due dates.  I'm almost wondering if I should just try to go with a midwife.  I was going to hire a doula to be there with me and my hubby, but the stupid swine flu put a ban on the hospitals in the area and only one person is allowed in the labor and delivery room with you and it has to be the same person the entire time, they can't switch out.  I will let you know what I find out.

Hi there! I'm trying for my vbac any day now! It sounds like you're really well informed and with all that knowledge there's no reason you shouldn't be able to find the right doc. With my last pg I had to switch at 28 weeks because we moved and it's really no big deal to start with a new provider that late. You see them so much more often late in pg that you'll prob see this person more times than your old one. If I could do my current pg over again I would def have gone w a midwife. My doc is very supprtive of the vbac but she's very clinical an impersonal. I stuck w her because she did my cs with my son (for breech) and if this one ended up the same way I wanted her to do the 2nd cs too. But looking back over my totally uncomplicated pg it would have been so nice to have the support of a midwife! Good luck finding your provider!!

So would you consider a homebirth with a midwife? I can't remember if you mentioned that... Then you can have whomever you please at your birth. I do NOT like that rule they've put in your hospitals... NOT COOL!!

Sadly the H1N1 visitor restrictions are happening ALL over North America. I know doulas who have lost clients because of the media created hype and fears; Hospitals can sadly put whatever type of restrictions they want on visitors.

Hello,

I wanted to send labor vibes for a VBAC your way.  You may want to see if you can have a midwife vs doctor- that sounds like a great option.

My first was C/S after 4 hours of pushing.  I had a mid wife and she was really good- but we just didn't make any progress.

With my 2nd I wanted a VBAC and my practice supports VBACs.  The OB wasn't sure and neither was the midwife- but it worked out great, I was glad they supported my decision.

I was stripped on a Sunday night ( I work in OB) by the midwife, was back the next morning and delivered in the evening.

My practice would not induce either, but they did agree that they would break my water the day before my scheduled c/s @ 40 weeks and see if it got me going- however all I needed was the stripping.  Typically they don't like to use Pitocin either.  My mid wife did give me some pitocin at the end b/c my cx were spacing out- which was just enough to help me out.

good luck!

Welcome!   I hope that you find the right OB for you that is willing to give you your VBAC.
I was also labelled as failure to progress, but I dilated to 10 and pushed for over 2 hours. Lets keep our fingers crossed we go all the way this time around - with a happy & healthy baby in the end. :)
