You ordered a $15 pizza.  There's a $2 delivery charge.  Do you tip the delivery guy?

Yes, I still tip as normal. I figure that the pizza shop is not giving the delivery boy the $2.00, they are putting it in their own pocket. Am I wrong? lol

I believe most stores use that delivery charge to cover mileage reimbursement....

I tip the usual amount, unless Jay was the one who made the call, found out about the delivery charge, and has been moaning and railing about it for the past 30 minutes---then I let Jay handle it, let him tip whatever he wishes, and start looking for a new delivery place, because I'm sure the next time we order from that joint we'll get a 'free' extra topping, if you know what I mean. ;)

Yeah, I'd say the delivery charge is for gas and milage on the car. Tip is for the delivery guy himself.

That's totally true..my stepson used to deliver and when gas prices were high, I swear he was almost paying them to work there, when you took into account the wear and tear on the car (which was mine).

That said, we have started ordering and picking up from the Pizza Hut that is less than a mile from our house to save the delivery charge and tip.  PIzza's alway ready to pick up in 15 minutes or so.

Again, it depends on service.  If you can't find my house (despite the fact that you're the same delivery guy who has been here many times before) and wait forever to call me or after you call me it still somehow takes you another 20 minutes even though based on where you said you were I could have walked to you in less time, then yes, you're either not going to get a tip or get a small one.  Or, like one guy we had, if you hand me the pizza and walk away because I paid over the phone, you're not going to get the tip I had waiting for you.  Now, if it shows up earlier than expected or they just generally did a good job and were friendly, sure they'll get a tip.  I'm pretty sure they make at least minimum wage though.  Tips are nice, but they are not dependant on them.

I've known people who have delivered for various pizza places.  Some were paid per delivery, some were not, some provide cars, some have to drive their own.  I generally give $2.00 or if I pay by cc which i usually do I round up when I write the tip in so they get at least $2 but up to $3.

I don't order from places that charge delivery...lol  Most pizzerias here don't, unless it's an order under somthing like $8-$10 and I've never ordered something that small before.

So I dunno.  They might get less tip but I'd never just tip 25 cents.  That's insulting.

ETA:  I reread the OP.  I'd give the guy $20...I hate waiting for change.  This is provided it's on time and hot.  But I still don't order from places that charge for delivery so the situation is moot to me.

If you're my husband you don't order delivery so you don't have to tip.  Yes. he is that cheap.

Where we live there are no delivery charges if the order is over $10.

But I suppose it there was I would still tip.  I'd go with the assumption that the charge goes to the establishment not the driver.

I think the places that charge for delivery use that money to recoup the restaurant's cost of employing a delivery person. I still tip regardless of a delivery charge, but most places around here don't charge on an order over a certain $ amount.

The delivery guy still gets a tip.  The $2 charge goes to the restaurant (or to reimburse gas for the delivery guy).  It isn't his tip, so he still gets one from me.

My dh has a 2nd job delivering pizzas.  He does not make minimum wage and he doesn't get the $2 delivery charge money.  He gets 6% commission and a couple bucks below minimum wage, so on small/far away orders, once you account for gas, he's not doing too well.   And as pp stated, a 25 cent tip is insulting....very.

We really don't order pizza anymore. Around here you would spend about $30- heck, I'd rather throw out $10 more and eat at Red Lobster = p

I used to work at Fox's Pizza. With our boss, hed paid delivery people $5.85 a hour ( what everyone got). On top of that, they would get the $1.75 delivery charge added to every delivery order, plus tip.

Once in a blue moon when I do order pizza, it really depends where I order from for the tip. Fox's is three blocks from my house, so I only do about $2. That's when I'm home alone and can't take the kids. They don't have a double stroller friendly entrence = p Everywhere else I would tip around $3.

I don't blame him. For most places you'd would save roughly $4  : )

For any food delivery, I do an automatic $5.00 or 20% - whichever is greater!

I tip on top of the delivery charge.  I don't deduct for being late/cold, but I do give a little extra if it's particularly rainy or cold out.  (I try not to order if it's too nasty for driving.)

Where that is already $17, I would personally just hand them a $20 and tell them to keep the change.

I hate delivery charges. It does not take 2$ worth of gas to drive the under a mile from every pizza place in our small town to our house. When it became the norm to charge delivery fees we quit ordering delivery and drove over to dominoes to get their 6$ deal (medium one topping that is ready when you order it.)  I started making pizzas at home and they're better than delivery pizzas and I don't have to tip myself, although a tip would be appreciated. ;)

I also get irritated by Papa Murpheys. Costs as much as a regular pizza place, but you have to go get it and then cook it. And doesn't taste any different than what I make at home.

A pizza made at home runs about $2 per pizza.

If you read my answer you'll find that I am also "that cheap."

What your husband might accept as a statement from you as something that's ok to say because you love each other, is a bit rude when you find that other people out there also think its a waste of money to spend money on something that you can easily do yourself for 5% of the cost.

It would be like if I made my pot say "I don't order delivery because I am not so ridiculous that I feel the need to throw away my money."

When we eat out we tip and we tip very well having both worked waiting tables (and my DH has delivered pizzas) but we prefer to use our money in other ways than paying someone 1.80 more for the gas they used to drive it to our house and then get the food 15 - 30 minutes later than if we had made it ourselves.

We also take the time to tell managers at places we eat out when our server has done a great job....which many people overlook but makes an easier work environment for your server and makes them happier, which leads to better service and better tips from other tables. And the manager who eels confident in a server gives that server better sections and better shifts...in my experience.

I'm a great tipper!!  ALways more then I should, but I know a lot of places only offer like $2.25 hrly and then they expect the ppl to live off their tips.  The only time I wont tip is if it was THE worst service in the world.

We live in a super small town- no delivery service- so I honestly don't know the answer to this! I would probably assume the delivery charge is for the pizza guy? But maybe I am wrong (haven't read responses yet). We are a thrifty family, so I'd probably pick it up even if we could get it delivered so I wouldn't have to pay extra! LOL
