All right, here's another one of my random thoughts.

Take your name, change it to a masculine version of your name, and then think about whether you (as a female) would like to have this name or not (or at least be able to pull it off), and why.

I was just thinking about my guy friend with the same name as my legal name (with an extra N, which doesn't change the sound, but I feel like I pronounce his name slightly different from my own). I like his version better than mine, so I was just thinking about whether or not a different spelling would make me like my legal name more.

It doesn't have to be the most masculine version, just a masculine version.
Like if your name is Tonya, you don't have to pick Anthony, but you could go with Antoine, or something.

So, I'll go with Lucian.
I think I could pull it off, but I'd still be going by Lucy.
I don't think I'd *like* to have it, as in "prefer" to have it over a girl name, but I don't think it'd be the end of the world for me to deal with being a Lucian. It's really masculine, and I don't think of it as a girl name, but I'd be able to handle it, I think. Whether or not other people would look at me like I had two heads over my name is a different story.

Now, how about you?

I choose Geremiah nn Geri. (Hey, parents who name a girl Jeremiah would fem it up with a G!) I would rock that name, and love it!!

Well, Jocelyn is technically unisex, though IME it's virtually unheard of as a male name in the US. I don't think I'd like being a guy named Jocelyn here - I think it would get irritating reactions as most people would perceive it as a girls' name - but as a female Jocelyn, I don't really even think of my name as unisex.

(* ETA - Actually, maybe I wouldn't mind being a guy with my name if it were spelled Josselin. I've been thinking about it and the more I look at that spelling, the more masculine it looks to me. The male version of me could rock Josselin "Joss", don't you think?)

My NN is Jos, which is also a male name (spelled Joss, usually). If my full name were Joss, I still don't think it would really bother me, though I think I would wish I had a more feminine longer name.

I can't think of another male equivalent to Jocelyn/Jos.

My name is a surname, so I will just have to think of a name similar in some way to this.

Dale is unisex and I'd hate to have it as a given name (I get called Dell all the time, but it's one thing when it's just short for something else and another when that's all there is).

There was a Delbert in 3rd grade. Man I'd hate that name. Dilbert too for that matter.

Delroy. Yep, hate it.

Delmonte. Again, truly loathe it.

Really, there aren't any good masculine names similar to this.

Then again, I wouldn't want to be a female Lucian either.

Ariel is technically a unisex name and I've seen men who've been named Ariel, but Ariel is purely feminine, IMO. As a boy named Ariel...eh. I don't know. I already know I would've been teased A LOT more than I already was in school. I probably would've hated my name (just like I did as a girl) and eventually gone by my mn or a nn.
However, the most masculine version I can think of would be Arick aka Eric. Arick was my nn for a short time when I was younger and I still use it as a male alias (odd, I know). But I think I would've been able to pull off Arick as a girl. I used to think about using Arick as my legal name (I was always thinking of new names for me to replace Ariel, as I hated being named Ariel back then) so I think I could've done it.

I would be Daniel which is the male version of my actual name Danielle, the same thing. I figure it is the same so there is not question that I could pull it off. I would feel just the same as I feel about my name now, just okay. The fact is that there are a lot of guys named Daniel my age, so I would still have a semi-popular first name. I feel like I would want another fn that is less popular though.

The masculine version of my name (Laura) is Laurence. Nope, couldn't pull that off unless I called myself Laurie, which turns it back into a girl's name again :)

Is there a male version of Annabel?!

I suppose Bellamy could be an option (which is actually unisex)- I have a male friend Bellamy and he totally rocks his name. I asked him once if he had ever been teased and he said no. i like it quite a bit, but not sure it would be the name I would choose for myself as a male or female.

Laurie is also a unisex name, but not often heard in use for a man. I would choose Laurent, as I don 't care much for Lawrence. I feel like the name is feminine enough for it to fly today, and I suppose it fits. But I do not care for the name on women.

I went to school with a male Ariel (air-ee-EL). He was the first I ever knew, so it is stamped in my head as a boy name. He was never teased about it, because he was the only one in school so no one had any female association with it. In HS a female Ariel came, and I was all "Cool, another girl with a boy name, like me!" lol!! When Little Mermaid came out, I dont remember any teasing (toward the guy), either.... weird.

Even though the only Ariel I know IRL is a girl, the name is definitely unisex to me - and I think it's because the spirit Ariel in Shakespeare's The Tempest is a male character (although I've seen a production where Ariel was played by a woman... but it's traditionally a male role). I'm pretty familiar with the play, and it's a strong association.

I was teased because of The Little Mermaid so... :P

I had an English teacher in high school that asked me if I was named after the Shakespeare play character. By that point I was in love with my name and proud of where it came from so I just looked at her and said "No. I was named after The Little Mermaid." She just kinda nodded, said "Oh." and walked away. I think she was embarrassed or something. lol!

You could always use the Hebrew version of Susan(na), which is Shoshana, and then use the unisex version, Shoshan. This would be the "most correct" version. I looked it up, as I was curious if there even was a male alternative. :P
Other suggestions are names like Sean/Shaun or Stuart.

There are a lot of boy versions of my name, Christina nn Christy.

My favorite versions would be Christoph (German)/Christophe (French), Christos, or Cristobal but I couldn't pull those off.

I could definitely pull off Christopher/Chris but it's so common. I also think I could pull off some of the nns for Chris- names, such as Kit or Topher.

I would dislike being called Christian.

I could probably pull of the male version of both my first and second names. My given names are Jade Alexandra. I could be a Jaden Alexander. Alexander is little masculine, but hey, it's a second name! Lol

Well my name is technically a boys name to begin with, Ashley...and I totally think I could pull it off. LOL. I also like Asher and Ashton though.

We named our daughter Rory knowing that it's unisex as well and it fits her perfectly. If I could convince my husband to use Asher or Ashton on our little guy due in April I would totally do it.

Thanks, Ariel! I could definitely pull off Shaun. I kind of like it! :-)
