HE washer

Hi Ladies, I don't frequently get on this board but have in the past. I have cloth diapered 3 out of 4 of our children and am expecting baby#5 in March. I use Bum Genius pocket diapers.

My washer is dieing and I have always had concerns on how well a HE washer would wash out the diapers since there is a lower water level. Does anyone use an HE and how well does it do? Is one extra rinse cycle enough or do I need to do more?

Hi happymomm! Congratulations on your pregnancy!!

Its funny you post this, because I just bought a HE washer yesterday. We got one with a steam setting and the sales person told us that it is amazing on stains. Seeing we had three children, she said it would work wonders for all their stains. She also told us that the steam sanitizes the clothing as well.

We have an HE front loader. (our old machine died!!) It has a sanitize setting, but you can't use it on your covers. So my washing routine is: everything (covers and inserts) in the machine on hot/hot with extra water and extra rinse at the end. Then I remove the covers and run a sanitize setting with extra water and extra rinse on the rest. I didn't do the extra cycle with my older son or when my second son was younger, but lately my son has really strong ammonia pee that doesn't seem to come out with just one wash- I think it is because he is getting so many teeth all at once! I haven't noticed any issues.

Does anybody handwash? Or do you all use a lot of diapers? I'm new to this whole idea, and this is my third baby... I want to cloth diaper (disposables cost so much over the course of 2 years). I'm wondering if anyone makes their own detergent as well for their cloth diapers? I've heard some make their own HE laundry detergent?
