Hi ladies! I am a first time mom and having a lot of trouble with my breastfeeding baby. He is having trouble latching and we have met with the lactation consultant and everything so hoping he gets the hang of it soon (only been a week so I hope he will learn) because it hurts every time he latches. He can't get enough of the breast in his mouth.

Anyways, I am super sore and basically feeding/pumping all day long. Does anyone have recommendations for good and supportive bras??

I have yet to find a great supportive nursing bra. I was just telling DH the other day that I may have to look online. I usually get mine from Motherhood or Target. I also like the nursing tanks. I hope that your little one learns to latch on. Hang in there, I know it can be frustrating for both of you, but nursing is so rewarding in the end.

nursing bras in general are not great...i get mine at motherhood. Hang in there withthe breastfeeding. Contrary to what some folks say, it hurts at first. with DS it took about three weeks for me not to want to scream everytime he latched on. Then smooth sailing after that. It takes a lot of commitment but you can do it. Nothing wrong with asking the consultant to come back or asking a differnet consultant to come help. I saw two consultants in the hospital and one at my house. For me my DS needed to be positioned differently (football) to get a good latch. GOOD LUCK!

I have been really happy with Anita maternity bras (specifically style #5068). I bought some from my favourite lingerie store in Vancouver (Diane's Lingerie) when I had my son two years ago. They were about $80 each, but the service at Diane's is so good that I felt it was worth it to pay more for something that was really going to fit and work well. I nursed my son until he was 16 months old, so I definitely got my money's worth out of those bras!

For this baby, I ended up buying 3 of the same bras from Macy's.com. Sorry Diane's! But they are only $55 each in the US and since I know these work for me, I felt more confident ordering online.

I was really sore first time around. You have virgin nipples that need to toughen up and maybe a different hold might work. I'm using nursing tanks from Target and nursing bras without underwire. I also recommend Mother love nipple cream (you can get it on Amazon). I discovered it in the wonderful gift shop at my hospital. It's not as thick and goes on your sore nipples gently. I also like the Lansinoh nursing pads. They're much softer and won't stick to the nipple like other pads do. Hope you can get some relief soon. I always felt like things really turned around for the better by 6 weeks, so hang in there.

Oh yes! Nipple cream is a must! I use Lanolin cream. It's a bit pricey, but it will help tremendously with sore nipples!

I always buy mine from target. Definitely stick with no underwire until you're not in pain.

Use nipple cream and make sure to let your nipples air dry.

Zak has had some issues latching on correctly(he won't open his mouth wide enough) and I learned if I lean back(in bed or in the recliner) and mess with his bottom lip he gets enough of the boob to make it not hurt. Now he's got it down. Maybe that will work for you.

You can do it!!!

Did the lactation consultant recommend a nipple shield to help with his latch?

Yeah they gave me a nipple shield in the hospital which I have been using only when I have to on the right side. He does really well on my left side. I also am pumping a lot. I just feel super overwhelmed because between nursing and pumping I literally am doing something with my nipples all day long! I have heard that using nipple shields is not good because babies get attached to them so that also scares me. Thoughts?

I hated nursing bras last time- I LIVED in my bravado nursing tanks. They were great :)

This time I got some sports-bra-style nursing bras from Motherhood... they seem comfy enough right now, we'll see how it is when I'm actually nursing! I do plan to wear the tanks some too, but wanted other options.

I don't have experience with nipple shields, but from what I've heard, they're great if you NEED them, but if you can get by without them, all the better. I remember being quite sore for the first 3-4 weeks and then it getting much better after that. Lanolin was definitely helpful!

Hi, I went into motherhood maternity and bought a few nursing bras. I thought it would be simple, but when I went in and tried them on, I quickly learned what I liked and did not like, and what was practical and what wouldn't be. I spent over an hour in there, but with DH's input, I opted for the underwire bra that unhooks in the front and also has the detachable straps for easy access to breastfeed. For this pregnancy I stopped wearing underwire because it was so darn uncomfy, but the underwire nursing bras at motherhood were surprisingly comfy. It's best to go in and try different styles on as well as nursing tanks. I was going to order them online without trying them on but I am glad I tried them on and I learned that I also didn't like the nursing tanks. I just bought regular tank tops. I have small breasts so it wasn't ideal for me to just detach the straps of the nursing bra or the nursing tank- it would be uncomfy for the baby to breastfeed as it would be in the way. I like the bra opening to the front so I can take off one side easily.
