I've read not to eat cold lunch may while pregnant because of listeria. I ate subs non stop during my last 2 pregnancies & am really wanting subs. Anyone else heard of this?

Yes. I was told the same thing. My nurse did say you can get subs toasted at places at Subway and then its ok. Or you can stick your meat in the microwave at home and then put it in fridge to cool off and eat later. I am going to just try to stay away from it as much as possible though.

Yes. I've been told to heat the meat until its steaming to kill anything. My OB just gave me a paper that says pg women are 20 times more likely to get it. My last two pg I heated it too. I'm to nervous to take chances. Maybe have subway heat it up?

I was told not to eat it as well ( I don't eat it to begin with) doctor said its fine if heated .
And they do toast subs at subway & firehouse subs... 2 of DH favorite places lol.

I've heard that, but have also heard that the risk for listeria is very low. Because I'm a worry wart, I'm going to avoid lunch meat unless it's been steamed!

My last pregnancy nobody every said anything and I was fine. This pregnancy I just make sure they are toasted or if made at home I microwave the meant for 30 seconds.

pre-packaged lunch meats also usually have nitrates in them which are not good while pregnant, same in hot dogs :( My Dr. said if I wanted a cold sub sandwich to make sure to get it from a place that slices it fresh and keeps it well refridgerated

I live in France and they don't say anything about lunch meat. haha. :) Just not cured ham or raw things. or gooey cheese that's non pasteurized. By lunchmeat I do mean good quality though - not full of ingredients for something that shouldn't have that many.

Oh but I do get screened for toxoplasmosis every month. Blah.

This is my tenth pregnancy and nothing has ever been said about not eating lunch meat. Plus I worked at Subway and ate cold subs all the time. I just asked my Dr about it and he said that the risk is very low. Listeria hasn't been seen in pregnany women for years and years.

My Dr said it was fine as long as it's from a trusted place that stores/packages everything correctly.

I would stick to Boars Head or another great brand without any fillers and definitely warm it up before eating.

I guess i'm not a worry wart, with my 2 previous pregnancies, I ate subway all the time without toasting it.. and hot dogs and lunch meat.. my dr never told me to avoid it.. said its a low risk.. I love lunch meat too much and crave it while pregnant..

Toast or microwave if at all possible, but if you are really craving a cold sandwich, don't guilt yourself too much :) Avoiding nitrates is a little more important (even when you're not pregnant!).
