& they're not talking about sea creatures.. they're talking about over-weight females..

How do you feel about this?
Do you see any law suits on the horizon from this & if so, what for?
Do you think this is going to hurt the image of any "skinny" celebrities who support PETA?

Their antics have always been kind of "out there" -- but this is pretty bad IMO

OK, once I get past my knee-jerk reaction to this:

It is true.  There are not many (if any?) overweight vegetarians.  This is not "feel good" marketing.  PETA is always out for shock-value.  This is right up their alley IMO.

Will they get sued over it?  Maybe, but that will just give more attention to their "cause".  I don't really think they care.  Will it look bad on skinny celebrities that support PETA?  I don't think so.

I was vegetarian for 2.5 years.   I didn't go down a single size.

Potato chips, fries, candy, pop, Kraft Dinner, ice cream, ... all vegetarian (tho not vegan).

I agree with the last part of the article:

"Well, you've got our attention, PETA. And we are reminded why we don't like you."

Come on PETA, seriously? With the growing number of overweight/obese people, this is the campaign you chose to go with? I am a larger woman and always have been, and I am really offended by this. In fact, I think I'll go eat a bunch of bacon today too!

There have been humerous weight loss campaigns promoting healthy lifestyles, like those radio commercials where people have lost random body parts (double chin, thunder thighs, butt, etc.) and then they explain how they did it. My favorite? A guy calls his neighbor

"Uh Bob, have you lost anything recently?"
"What do you mean?
"Well, I think you lost something, I found it on my lawn"
"What is it?"
"Well...it's...it's...your butt Bob."
"Oh yeah, I lost that around the time I started walking to work everyday"
"Uh, so...you want it back or should I just throw it out?"
etc. etc.

How do you feel about this?
-Offended. As if overweight/obese people don't feel bad enough already, there has to be giant billboards and ad campaigns calling us whales!
Do you see any law suits on the horizon from this & if so, what for?
-I don't think so. I could see if it named or showed the face of a specific person without their consent, but unless there's an alliance for the overweight/obese, and they try to sue for defamation, I don't think anything would hold up in court. I mean, let's face it, as awful as this ad campaign is, larger people are made fun of in a multitude of ways by many different people or groups, so PETA would just ask why this was any different and/or they were just trying to raise awareness to the growing obesity problem in America.
Do you think this is going to hurt the image of any "skinny" celebrities who support PETA?
-I don't think so. I think it will just serve to further damage PETA's reputation among the rest of us. The people who support PETA will most likely continue to support them, since I'm guessing they have a lot of vegetarians among them already. But hey, I already think PETA's gone off their rocker and PETA's launced so many other crazy outburts (i.e. our Fly-Murdering President) that before long, nobody will take them seriously or even care. Kind of like that crazy cat collecting aunt we all have, "Oh crazy Aunt Millie, whatever will we do with you?"

The only law suit even remotely possible is the bikini lady's - if the picture was used against her will (of if her face in not visible, can she not sue?) Americans need to stop being so law suit happy. (I have several family members who are like that and they drive me batty)

PETA is not an organization that I will ever support. They want to put us out of business (reptile breeding) and I eat meat. I was a veggie for about 3 years in college - and I gained weight. As JulieBo put it, there are plenty of things that are vegetarian that are horribly fattening or just generally bad for you.

How do you feel about this? completely inappropriate
Do you see any law suits on the horizon from this & if so, what for? I dont know what legal aspect you could get them on(I would like to hear what some of our more knowledgeable ladies have to say).  I would like to see them have to take that billboard down though.
Do you think this is going to hurt the image of any "skinny" celebrities who support PETA?  I would hope that the celebrities would be up in arms over this.
I also just wanted to add that I know someone who lives as a vegan.  She is the same size as me.  I by no means am a tiny person :-)

Becca I think it's a cartoon isn't it? looks that way on my screen.

I think it's funny, it's has somewhat of a truth side too but unless you are a healthy vegetarian you can still gain weight like Julie said chips, soda and ice cream don't have meat in them.

I see nothing wrong with it, eating less or no meat is healthier, if you do it the right way...and healthier people IN GENERAL (before someone jumps down my throat about their sickness making them bigger) are not obese.

that is the most rediculous billboard ever. why would you tell someone trying to lose weight to go vegetarian if its not something they would normally do. it would make it harder to lose weight as they struggle to find new food groups to balance out their need for protein etc.

peta just bug me so much. do they even put any thought into anything they do. its just people who sit around and try to decide whats the most effective way of peeing people off.

I'm a member of PETA> People who Eat Tasty Animals!!! ha ha ha. lame, but I had to do it.

I think they are wack jobs. My old supervisor was a vegetarian and she was on the larger size, and I was a co-worker of a vegetarian and she was thin as a rail. I think this add is offensive. I don't think there really...well, ok, they just basically called all overweight people whales, so MAYBE somewhere, some sue happy large person would find a way.

ETA: If there are any PETA members on the board, I was wondering what do you do if you have a bug infestation in your house? I had ants try to take over my basement and gladly went to the store and got spray to kill them. But they are living breathing things. Just wondering.

Thats just great.  As if overweight women dont already struggle badly enough with their self esteem lets have billboards pointing out their resemblance to a whale?

It is no secret that it is unhealthy to be overweight.  I struggle with my weight and since changing our eating styles at home I have noticed a huge change in my energy levels, but being referred to as a whale only serves the purpose of making me want to eat a candybar after doing so good for so long.

If we really want to help people become healthier we need to give them positive reinforcement, not tear them down.  And TBPH cutting meat out isnt going to miraculously melt away the pounds.

Wow.  While I can understand someone agreeing with the "go vegetarian for a healthier you" message that seems to be contained somewhere within that ad, I really don't understand how one can find it "funny". It is CRUEL, plain & simple. What kind of person laughs at cruelty?

I wonder what Jillian Michaels (Biggest Loser trainer and author of "Master Your Metabolism") thinks of this ad? She is really into eating healthy, which includes a ton of organic fruits & veggies AND lean proteins. I can't see her supporting something like this and I have much more respect for her than for the celebrities who support PETA or for anyone who thinks this ad is "funny".

You beat me to it... I just jumped on here to post about this!

Do they really think people won't find that offensive??

How do you feel about this?
I am wondering though, do you think it wouldn't be so offensive if the Save The Whales was gone and PETA was larger.. actually getting their point across rather than being AS insulting? Some obese people would lose weight if they ate less meat... less calories = weight loss.

Do you see any law suits on the horizon from this & if so, what for?
Nah.
Do you think this is going to hurt the image of any "skinny" celebrities who support PETA?
Um.. I don't really know who their supporters are... don't know much about PETA really.

Yes, she is, and I saw a little thing on the Early Show she did that said "STOP THE FAT TALK!" Basically the point she got across was stop talking about yourself being fat because it isn't helping you mentaly.

Save a cow, eat a vegetarian!  Sorry I just saw this on a bumper sticker today  and it made me lol :)  My bff is a vegetarian and is in a constant battle with her weight.  She goes to the gym 4 times a week too.  Sometimes the call of bread and cheese are too great, as well as the role genetics plays.

I don't think it's true that becoming vegetarian will necessarily make you lose weight. I was vegetarian for 13 years and had periods of being skinny and periods of being overweight.

Many new vegetarians make the mistake of replacing meat with cheese. They also, if they aren't eating right, often don't feel full enough and just keep eating even when they've had too many calories.

Heck, I've known overweight vegans in my time. Chips are vegan.

There are a lot of fattening vegan foods like vegan ice cream. The only thing that is good about being a vegan and weight loss is that if you go to a restaurant you can't eat those desserts, so you can save some calories there. But if you are just a vegetarian, then cake and brownies and all that are still okay. lol. So...I don't think being a vegetarian makes you lose weight at all. French fries are still eatable when you are and so are onion rings.

But the whole "save the whales" thing isn't really bothering me otherwise. That fat girl on the billboard is looking pretty cute in her polka dot bikini anyway. lol. I mean...peta does a lot worse than this. I know that calling fat people whales is supposed to be offensive, but it's just such an old joke that it doesn't even really phase me.

Ha, this is too funny, i cant believe that they would do this. I am an overweight woman and am very comfy in my own skin. If i cut out the extra eggs in the morning and maybe never ate desert again, id be on the smaller side but still a little chunky. But id rather just enjoy my life as i enjoy my eggs and desert alot more than jogging.  Its really not offencsive to me, i dont get offended by much. Its their choice, i mean, really, i dont think its a big deal. Is it good business decision, i dont know, im leaning towards no as alot of the US is obese. But obese people like me get made fun of all the time, i dont think that something like this is really going to go make a whole bunch of people eat an extra salad a day. Alot of us already do that. Ahhhh Peta, ............... your just going to depress a whole lot of people with this and in the end they will just end up going to mcdonalds and ordering a DOUBLE cheesburder. there ya go, lots less cows in the end......... when will they learn ?

Well I think it's hilarious and I think it's true.  We as Americans do need to lose the blubber!   Now I don't think becoming a vegetarian will make you lose the blubber.  It goes beyond that.  However, this isn't something I wouldn't expect PETA to publish.  They are a little racier when it comes to campaigns and they defintely aren't afraid to rattle the cage.  I think if this add can help one obese person get the real mesage behind this add, which is to help overweight people find a solution, then   PETA has done it's job in saving America's whales.

No, what for?  Telling the truth?
Do you think this is going to hurt the image of any "skinny" celebrities who support PETA?  Who cares! Those skinny celebs can go eat a hamburger!

Nice.  Just wonderful.  I am so glad that you were here to give me the eye opening ass kicking that I need.  Thank you so much for this, it is going to make such a difference in my life.  I am going to immediately work on my weight issue because of you and your campaign to save my whale ass.
