I agree with the last part of the article:
Â
"Well, you've got our attention, PETA. And we are reminded why we don't like you."
Â
Come on PETA, seriously? With the growing number of overweight/obese people, this is the campaign you chose to go with? I am a larger woman and always have been, and I am really offended by this. In fact, I think I'll go eat a bunch of bacon today too!
Â
There have been humerous weight loss campaigns promoting healthy lifestyles, like those radio commercials where people have lost random body parts (double chin, thunder thighs, butt, etc.) and then they explain how they did it. My favorite? A guy calls his neighbor
Â
"Uh Bob, have you lost anything recently?"
"What do you mean?
"Well, I think you lost something, I found it on my lawn"
"What is it?"
"Well...it's...it's...your butt Bob."
"Oh yeah, I lost that around the time I started walking to work everyday"
"Uh, so...you want it back or should I just throw it out?"
etc. etc.
Â
How do you feel about this?
-Offended. As if overweight/obese people don't feel bad enough already, there has to be giant billboards and ad campaigns calling us whales!
Do you see any law suits on the horizon from this & if so, what for?
-I don't think so. I could see if it named or showed the face of a specific person without their consent, but unless there's an alliance for the overweight/obese, and they try to sue for defamation, I don't think anything would hold up in court. I mean, let's face it, as awful as this ad campaign is, larger people are made fun of in a multitude of ways by many different people or groups, so PETA would just ask why this was any different and/or they were just trying to raise awareness to the growing obesity problem in America.
Do you think this is going to hurt the image of any "skinny" celebrities who support PETA?
-I don't think so. I think it will just serve to further damage PETA's reputation among the rest of us. The people who support PETA will most likely continue to support them, since I'm guessing they have a lot of vegetarians among them already. But hey, I already think PETA's gone off their rocker and PETA's launced so many other crazy outburts (i.e. our Fly-Murdering President) that before long, nobody will take them seriously or even care. Kind of like that crazy cat collecting aunt we all have, "Oh crazy Aunt Millie, whatever will we do with you?"
