I am really considering doing the Susan G Komen 3-day for the cure walk. It is a 3 day work - 60 miles to raise awareness of breast cancer.

The registration fee - $90
You must raise $2300 to walk
It is Oct 29-31 in Tampa (Halloween weekend)

so questions:
Has anyone done this? I know that JenBerry did it last year.
If so, was it hard to raise the money? How did you do it?
If you have not done it, would you consider it?
What about missing Halloween with your kids?
Lots of training which takes time, could you commit?Could you find the time?

I so want to do this. A group of ladies from my work did it last year and I hear they are doing it again. I am sure I could join their group. Tampa is an hour from where I live.

Not a clue lol...sorry...

Why do they require you to raise a certain amount to participate? Wouldn't they just be happy that you wanted to show your support? Or do they pay for hotel/travel or something? That seems odd!

I did a 5 mile susan g kommen race for the cure like 6 years ago. It was really fun and I'm glad I did it. But I wouldn't do it if they were forcing me to raise a certain amount of money.

What happens if you don't make that much? Do they take what you did raise and not let you participate? Or will you have to return the $ to the people who donated because they don't want you to participate?
Sometimes I'm here, sometimes I'm not...

I think the $90 registration fee pays for food and tents -no hotels.

If you do not raise the money by the walk date then you either have to pay the difference or request a delay donation. Either way if you do not raise it, you pay it.

I know the ladies at my work who did it last year had lots of fundraisers.

You would think they would want anything you raise but maybe this amount was determined based on how much it costs them to put it on.
I am really not sure.

I was going to do it a few years ago, but decided not to once I was told you HAVE to raise that much money to participate.  You pay the registration fee to cover the tents, food, and drink.  I didn't understand why they make you raise a certain amount of money just to participate...ridiculous!
Instead, I did the Light the Night Walk.  You aren't required to raise a certain amount of money.  They do offer incentives though for raising certain amounts of money.  The first year that I did it was when I was pregnant with my oldest and I only raised one hundred or so dollars, but they didn't care.  This past year, (my 3rd year participating) I raised over $800.  Granted, the LTN walk isn't a three day walk (It is only a few miles and is just for one evening), but it is for a great cause and the majority of the money raised goes towards research and development, not towards the cost of the events.

Yikes...I wouldn't want to take that risk! That's a lot of money to pay if you don't get your donations... but of course, if you read my "school fundraisers" thread below, you will see just how I feel about asking people for money lol! You would need to get something like 46 donations of $50 in order to make that quota...I don't know that many people who would be in a position to donate that...and I certainly don't know  92 people who would donate $25 a piece!

Yeah that is one of the reason I have not joined yet. It is a lot of money. I am going to have lunch with one of the ladies from work that did it and she what she says about it. I know they did lots of fundraising.

Wow. I understand it is for breast cancer.... but you have to raise $2,300 to walk? With a $90 registration fee? That's a lot of money. I wouldn't blink with the $90, but wow. I have never heard that you HAD to have it too. I would love to do it, but that kind of money is wayyyyyy out of the question for our budget right now.

Have you considered maybe doing the avon walk instead? I'm all for the susan g komen fund but that's ridiculous to require that kind of money. They should be happy with what you bring in.

No I have not looked into that one. I think with this one it is not only raising money for a super cause but the accomplishment of 60 miles in 3 days and the experience.

I should probably go through my address book and see if I have that many friends and family that would donate.

Thanks

I've never done it, but the one radio personality I listen to did it last year.  They (her and a group of friends) had beef and beers, and other fundraisers to raise the money.  They also had some sort of event at a local bar/resturaunt, and procedes or a % of procedes went to them raising money.
I know Friendly's will do this, if you want to raise money, you can set up a night and a % of every dinner goes to their group.
Good luck

well, it is a fundraiser.  And this is different to some extent than Race for the Cure which also benefits SG Komen - and has far broader participation.  I don't think the group expects that all walkers write a check - to some extent they want them out there "knocking on doors" because it brings attention to the foundation's work.  Also, it shows that people are committed - I'm willing to bet that the cost of producing this event - as it occurs throughout the summer in several cities - exceeds the $90 registration fee.

To the OP - have you thought about putting together a FB page or other website?  I think you could connect people back to the online donation page for the walk - and they can make an electronic donation on your behalf - it saves you from having to collect money - and they get the receipt for a tax deduction right from the site.

I would not do it.  Just because of the amount required to be raised, or else you have to pay it yourself.  To me, that is not just about getting people aware of the group, that is just wanting money.  Yes, they do good, but to be honest, everyone who doesn't live under a rock knows about SGK.

I think that if their whole point was to raise money they wouldn't require people to raise a certain amount of it.

I will definitely use FB if I do it. I know it is a lot but I like the challenge.

I think there has to be a reason why they have this amount. I will have to ask around to see why.
I agree that they should be happy to raise any amount.

If you want to do something to support a breast cancer or cancer in general I would go to www.cancer.org and select "In My Community" and enter your zip code.
You can find local events.. in October there are events called Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.. no registration fee and no minimum amount to be raised.
If you are looking for a team event or something that is a challenge I would check out Relay For Life.. it is an overnight event (because cancer never sleeps) that is normally held on a high school track. You get a team together and set up a tent in the field and try to keep one person walking or jogging on the track all night (typical events are 12 hours.. some are 24 though)
There is a suggested fundraising goal of $1000 per team but it is not required to participate. There is also a cancer survivors reception at the event and the survivors take the first lap to kick everything off. At night fall there is a candle lighting ceremony that is very moving. I highly recommend checking it out.

I'll be honest, this needing to raise a certain amount puts me off of donating to them.  There is no need for a $90 registration fee PLUS raising $2300 in donations.  They chould/should charge a registration fee that covers the cost of the event per person, so that your registration covers your food & tent.  Then any money raised go to the organization.

i am doing relay for life this year too.  The thing that excited me about the 3 day 60 mile is the challenge.  Seeing someone die of cancer (ovarian cancer) is hard but you do not know what they go through and the physical aspects of this challenge is to give you an idea (even though it is no where close to what a cancer patient goes through) of their challenges. To me it is so much about the challenge. If I can do this, how great for me. I know many that have died of breast, no one extremely close but I have nieces that have lost both a grandmother and a great grandmother so it is something that I hope they do not ever have to deal with.

I have nothing to add except "Good Luck!!"

I did the March of Dimes walk 2 years ago.  I wanted to do it last year, but no longer work for a company with a team, and just never got around to it (procrastination...the story of my life...)

I would highly recommend using the social networking sites to aid in your fund raising.

The reason you have to commit to such a ridiculous amount of fund raiser money to do the 3 day walk (presently it's 2300.00 plus the 90.00 registration fee) is probably because the CEO Nancy Brinker makes a half a million dollars a year and pays the charity's 50 top executives more than $100,000 each. Do your research... charity financial info is available to the public and should be researched so you know where your money is going. I think it is a disgrace that this woman and her execs are wealthy due to this charity and the death of her sister. There are plenty of charities I give to but the susan g komen is NOT one of them!!

Any charity that does not appreciate what I can afford to give doesn't deserve my hard earned money at all.
