Hi,
This is my first pregnancy, I am now 37weeks. I've been to the hospital once already for false labor and another time because I had high blood pressure and extremely swollen feet.
How do you actually know when your water breaks? Lots of people just say you will know! But what if I confuse my water breaking for just something normal? Some people say it's like getting your period.
How will I know?

I believe the first signs will have been the passing of your mucous plug. Your water can't break before that happens. Some waters break all of a sudden in a gush, some are like peeing that you can't stop and others have a slow leak. If you find your underwear is wet and won't stop and that the liquid is clear, chances are that it is your amniotic fluid. I haven't given birth yet, so I hope an experienced mama comes along to describe it from personal experience for you.

GL and congrats on your LO!

All I can say is when in doubt, get checked out. My water broke with my daughter but I had been dealing with urine leaks from pressure of the baby on my bladder. Some women say they have a big gush follewd by a constant small stream of fluid. For me it just felt like I was wetting myself constantly. My advice would be to time it because if its urine it will run out eventually so after 30 min. if you are still leaking get to the hospital. Its better to be safe than sorry. Just dont worry too much over 80 percent of labor starts with regular contactions and not the water breaking. Good luck.

When I was pg with DS I never noticed losing my mucus plug. When my water broke I had no sign before hand. I just stood up from the couch and felt something wet. I thought that I had peed my pants. I went to the bathroom and urinated. When I was done peeing there was still clear liquid trickling out so I knew that my water broke. I hope this helps a little. GL

When I had my son I never noticed my mucus plug either. The day my water broke I woke up about 4:30 am to go to the bathroom. I just felt weird and when I wiped I noticed it was light pink tinged. I kept wiping but was still damp. I stood in the bathroom for a good 15 minutes trying to decide whether or not to wake my husband... then I bent over to pick something up and felt a small gush. My contractions didn't start until about an hour later at 5:30 am. I think will know when your water breaks because even if it starts out as a small leak it won't stop and may get heavier. One thing that surpised me when I was in labor (he was my first) is that you continue leaking the whole time. I guess it makes sense since your water replaces itself every 3 hours or something like that. I actually had a towel between my legs because I felt cold and wet just laying there.
